Advanced Proofing Options Available in Word

Good Afternoon Everyone!

I wanted to take a minute to tell you about some advanced proofing options that are available in Microsoft Word 2010. I’m sure some writers are using different or older versions of Word, but the process is very similar between the different versions. The follow steps will enable all of the bells and whistles in terms of editing:

  1. Under File in a Word doc, click “Options” (it may be called “Preferences” in a different version)
  2. On the left nav bar, go to “Proofing”
  3. The 3rd section down deals with spelling and grammar options; make sure all of these boxes are checked

The readability statistics on Word are pretty cool; they show the grade level at which you are writing.

Please note that these proofing options do not always catch everything, it’s only a helper. There is no substitute for actively proofing an article. Always read your work with fresh eyes, take a walk and then come back to edit!

Please feel free to share any editing tips, whether related to Word or just helpful suggestions!

Does anyone know if Open Office has something like this? Thanks:)

Hi Gina, I hope all is well.

We have Open Office in the office here and we have found that there isn’t a built-in grammar checker. What we did find is that there is an add-on that might be helpful.
    Check It Out

Many of the available grammar checkers miss some of the same errors, including Word. Errors, like using the incorrect form of there/their, doesn’t register in any editing program I’ve found. Like I said, there’s no good substitute for the human eye.

    Thank you Heather.

No problem. If I come across anything new, I’ll be sure to let you know. 🙂

  5. I am going over to my “word” right now and check it out. We learn something new everyday around here. Thank you!
